What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

 The current workplace is complex for patients and health care professionals. With workplace incivility being common, health care facilities require leaders who can maintain healthy workplaces. Such workplaces are characterized by positivity, high employee motivation, and teamwork (Rosen et al., 2018). Good leaders should understand their values and implement positive traits in organizational leadership. The CliftonStrengths Assessment is an effective tool for the personal evaluation of leadership strengths. The purpose of this paper is to describe my core values, mission and vision, CliftonStrengths Assessment summary, behaviors that should be strengthened, and a plan to achieve my vision.

A Description of My Core Values

The core values of a leader highlight the priority principles as far as leadership and team organization are concerned. My core values include connectivedness, positivity, achiever, harmony, and consistency. The implication is that I believe in cohesion and approaching issues with a positive mind. As Rawlinson et al. (2021) noted, cohesion is instrumental in teamwork and promotes interprofessional collaboration. The same spirit is crucial when leading diverse health care teams. Leaders also work to achieve specific goals. An achiever is highly determined to achieve those goals and apply appropriate methods to energize individuals and teams. A goal-driven approach helps leaders to remain focused on their assigned roles.

Personal Mission and Vision Statement

Personal mission: to utilize individual strengths to create healthy workplaces for patients and health care professionals.

Vision statement: to continually develop as a leader committed to advancing quality and safe patient care in health care facilities and communities.

CliftonStrengths Assessment Summary

Organizational leaders are unique, and their core values and individual strengths differentiate them. My top five themes, as derived from the CliftonStrengths Assessment, include connectivedness, positivity, achiever, harmony, and consistency. Broadly, these traits are my dominant values since they describe my priority leadership principles. Connectedness has much to do with creating links and believing that each individual is part of a bigger system. It helps leaders to promote systems thinking where constituent parts work together within the context of larger systems (McNab et al., 2020). Positivity implies leading with enthusiasm, while the harmony theme denotes the commitment to address problems by finding common ground. The achiever theme is crucial for goal-centered leadership, while consistency ensures that leaders remain focused on their objectives and tasks.

Behaviors that I Wish to Strengthen

Personal improvement is essential for individuals looking forward to becoming good leaders. I would like to strengthen the harmony and connectedness aspects of my leadership. The current workplace is highly diverse, and conflicts are inevitable. Harmonious problem-solving will be crucial for the cohesion and energy of such teams. Positivity implies individuals looking upon a leader for guidance. Improving this trait is essential for transformational leadership to thrive.

Development Plan

The best way to improve the harmony aspect is to improve problem-solving skills. This can be achieved by integrating creativity and critical thinking in problem-solving and being wary of personal bias when addressing conflicts. Positivity can be improved by practicing emotional intelligence, which helps leaders to develop effective personal relationships with colleagues and other team members (Lambert, 2021; Stalter & Mota, 2018). Achieving my vision of progressive growth as a leader requires continuous learning, mentorship, and interaction with diverse teams. I can achieve this by advancing my education and joining appropriate professional nursing organizations for exposure, resource facilitation, and career guidance.

Conclusion

Health care organizations require forward-thinking leaders for healthy work environments. Understanding personal strengths and applying them effectively is critical to creating healthy work environments in health care facilities. Good leaders should also be guided by clear missions and visions. Above all, personal development is essential for progressive improvement as a leader to better cope with the inevitable changes in the advancing health practice.
