The Biblical principles and values being taught in the classroom perpetuate the cognitive virtue of developmental psychology. This refers to the scientific research of how and why humans change and develop within the course of their life (Dant, 2018). This branch of psychology argues that morals and virtues that are taught to people at early stage in life end up being imprinted in their behavioral mechanisms given that their brains are still in the growth stage and capturing of information becomes quite easy (Dant, 2018). Biblical principles being taught in the classroom end up being cognitively embedded in the student’s mind and are easily incorporated into their behavioral mechanisms as their brains are still in the affirmative growth stages (Dant, 2018). As stated in Proverbs 22, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it ” (English Standard Version, 2001).
I think biblical principles ought not to be taught in public schools. This is due to the creation of unprecedented religious biasness and conflicts of interest (American Civil Liberties Union., 2021). Public schools are social institutions that host students from different religious backgrounds which are all constitutionally respected in the school. Teaching biblical principles in the school would be similar to endorsing the Christian religion and seeking to favor it over the other religions (American Civil Liberties Union., 2021). After all, Galatians 3:28 states that “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (James et al., 1979). This is a dilemmatic situation that would easily cause religious upheaval from students of different faiths such as Hinduism, Islam or even Pagans.
