Week 4 Discussion 1 Transformational Leadership Theory and Leader-member Theory Week 4 Discussion 1, Transformational Leadership Theory and Leader-member Theory

Answer:

Transformational Leadership Theory and Leader-member Theory

A transformational leader is able to consider the needs of the employee, but also the company. When an employee perceives that their leader cares about them as a person, they will be more likely to work harder for that leader.

A transformational leader sets a clear vision of what the team is expected to accomplish and helps the team members achieve that goal. A mediocre leader will be less effective because they may not have a clear vision, or they might not be able to communicate that vision in a way that helps the employees understand what they need to accomplish.

The best leaders are those who are able to balance transforming the team with empowering the members of that team. That is why I believe a transformational leadership style is best for all businesses.

Transformational Leadership Theory

In nursing, transformational leadership theory is an approach that strives to encourage employees to work toward a common goal by inspiring them. This type of leadership emphasizes the value of a shared vision and helps employees achieve it through mutual respect, trust, and commitment. It also incorporates elements of transactional leadership, which means that there are rewards for achieving goals and punishments for failing to do so.

Leader-member Theory

Leader-member theory is a type of organizational theory that focuses on the relationship between leaders and their followers. This theory assumes that leaders have different styles based on their personality type, but they can adjust these styles depending on the situation at hand. A good leader will be able to recognize when one of their employees needs a certain style more than others in order to perform well; this will help build trust between the leader and employee as well as improve overall productivity for both parties involved

In this week’s discussion, you will consider the transformational leadership theory and leader-member exchange theory.

As you consider these theories, you have been assigned to one of two groups. Each group has a different prompt to complete. Be sure to read the prompt specifically assigned to your group.

Group A: Compare and contrast the transformational leadership theory and leader-member exchange theory. As part of your comparison, be sure to discuss at least one example for each theory. For example, if you were comparing the transformational leadership theory with the trait approach, you might discuss how both are concerned with the characteristics of leaders (traits), but the trait approach focuses on generic traits, while the transformational leadership theory is concerned with how leaders are able to motivate followers.

Group B: Select one example from your personal or professional experience that demonstrates each of these theories in action. Then, explain how each example supports the idea presented by each theory. For example, if you selected an individual who consistently set challenging goals for others as an example of a transformational leader, you might explain that this person’s behavior demonstrates their ability to inspire followers toward a shared vision or goal (a component of transformational leadership).

Discuss and explain your leadership style. Do you think this is a good style of leadership? How are you able to exercise effective leadership in your current role? How can you apply the transformational theory in your role as the leader of an organization?

Pretend you are a registered nurse who just finished graduate school. You are applying for a position as a newly hired nurse supervisor for a medical-surgical floor. This is your first opportunity to serve in a leadership role, and you are very excited. What type of leadership style will you use to lead the nursing staff? What kind of interpersonal relationships will you want to develop with your team members?
