Topic3DQ2: Discuss how functional health patterns help a nurse understand the current and past state of health for a patient. Using a condition or disease associated with an elimination complexity, provide an example. Include the possible pathophysiological causes of the condition or disease.

Functional health patterns assist a nurse in understanding a patient's current and past state of health by providing a comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient. It offers a comprehensive format for evaluating patients across 11 different health patterns; each pattern includes a unique set of questions designed to measure the patient's strengths and weaknesses, which may be related to the diagnostic categories and represent the individuality of the patient (Khatiban et al., 2019). Information obtained when assessing functional health provides the nurse with a holistic view of a patient’s human response to illness and life conditions. Using this framework, the nurse can identify any health-related issues with the patient and their family members that may need a more thorough assessment, as well as confirms the patient's comprehension of the situation, enabling confusion to be cleared out (Khatiban et al., 2019). The cirrhosis of the liver is an example of elimination complexity. It is an irreversible liver disease, which results in the structural collapse of the liver (Whitney, 2022). It can be caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV (Sharma & John, 2022). Other causes of cirrhosis include autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hemochromatosis, Wilson disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Budd-Chiari syndrome, drug-induced liver cirrhosis, and chronic right-sided heart failure. Jaundice, edema, ascites, blood clotting issues, combined with metabolic disturbance, appear as the liver structure fails (Fullwood & Purushothaman, 2014, as cited in Whitney, 2022). Reduced appetite, nausea, vomiting, dull abdominal discomfort, jaundice, frequent bruising, constipation, or diarrhea are some of the early indications of cirrhosis, while later indications, such as pulmonary edema, hypoxia, and mental abnormalities, can have detrimental impacts on a number of bodily systems (Huether & McCance 2014, as cited in Whiteny, 2022). Nutritional, elimination, and activity are some of the health patterns that can be used to assess patients present and past health status in this case
