Topic 7 DQ 1Often, educators think they cannot make accommodations for students unless the student has an IEP or 504 Plan. As seen from the readings this week, sometimes those accommodations serve as a pre-referral intervention. What are some interventions or accommodations you mightcommonly make for students prior to referring the student to a child study team?

There are many interventions and accommodations that can be made for students before

referring them to the child study team. The teacher can do an observation of the student, like

watch how they take notes in class, is the student organized. Do they just stuff their notes in

their backpack or do they put them in a folder for that particular class? Next, the teacher should

compare all the test scores of the student. Are the scores similar across the board or did they

score high on one test and lower on all the others. The teacher could change the classroom,

rearrange the student's seating. Identify the student's learning strengths and needs. Monitor

the student's assignments, are they not turning them in at all or turning them in late on a

regular basis. See if the student is not understanding the assignments and what they are

struggling with to see if you need to make it simpler.
