Nursing is an evolving practice that embraces innovation to improve health outcomes. Over time, the influence of technology and data has been massive as healthcare providers seek to reduce costs and enhance access, among other goals. Central to healthcare evolution is nursing informatics, which allows clinicians to integrate technology into patient care. As change drivers in their respective areas, nurses should explore opportunities for improving outcomes and efficiencies and propose appropriate informatics projects. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to propose an informatics project for improving patient outcomes in the current healthcare facility.

Project Description

Patient needs, technology capacity, and organizational resources determine the type of informatics project an organization requires. The proposed project is the AllTimeNurse app that is customized to the needs of patients with chronic diseases. This app will help the patients monitor and overcome both physical and mental health needs as they emerge. A key component is the messaging platform, where patients will interact with clinicians in the healthcare facility to ask about issues concerning their health. Nursing research supports the use of health apps in chronic disease management by supporting patients through informative videos, activation reminders, and remote monitoring (Fernández et al., 2023). Similar components will be integrated into the AllTimeNurse app to support patients comprehensively. According to Fernández et al. (2023), patients prefer a multifaceted mobile app to address their varying health needs. The proposed app is also multidimensional since it can educate, improve communication, and assist in patient monitoring. Patients should be able to use it using computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Stakeholders Impacted by the Project

Stakeholders are valuable organizational members who should be consulted and actively engaged during change implementation. Their involvement is critical to the project’s success, and they will experience the project outcomes directly. A key stakeholder group is the organization’s management. According to Graham and Woodhead (2021), organizational leaders influence innovation by resource facilitation, refining care designs, and creating a culture that supports continuous improvement. A culture of innovation is crucial for mHealth to succeed in healthcare, underlining the significance of organizational leaders as key stakeholders. The information technology (IT) manager will also be impacted by the project significantly. In the current facility, the IT manager guides the organization in identifying the appropriate technologies to adopt and is at the center of tech-related workflows.

The other stakeholders include nursing professionals and patients. As innovation enablers in healthcare, nurses use mHealth interventions to influence positive behaviors, improve communication, and educate patients, among other purposes (Paradis et al., 2022). Given this, the proposed app requires their involvement in vital phases, including design, implementation, and evaluation. Their knowledge and app utilization for the intended purpose are critical success factors. Patients are valuable stakeholders since they utilize healthcare services. Chronic patients require timely interaction with care providers and access to essential health resources. Their motivation to use the app and digital literacy are instrumental in the project’s success.

Patient Outcomes Improvements and How They Would Occur

Healthcare projects should be outcome-oriented and the AllTimeNurse project is founded on the same principle. To a significant extent, the project is aimed at improving outcomes related to mHealth adoption in patient care. Such patient outcomes include positive behavior change, improved clinical decision-making, and healthy patient-provider interactions (Rowland et al., 2020). If used effectively, mHealth apps support clinical diagnosis and decision-making by supporting timely data exchange between clinicians and patients. Positive behavior change is achieved by nurses using mobile apps to deliver disease-related education, such as dietary choices and lifestyle changes depending on the disease’s severity. Mobile apps also improve patient adherence to medications and the general treatment plan (Rowland et al., 2020). These outcomes demonstrate an empowered patient population that can effectively manage its health conditions without physical clinical visits.
