Sickle Cell Disease in African Americans College of Nursing, University of South Alabama NU-607: Scientific Underpinnings of Advanced Practice Nursing

Philosophic Viewpoints Philosophy is a way of thinking that captures a person’s essence. Philosophy explores how a person thinks and the meaning of their own beliefs. Two main philosophical thoughts are analytical and continental. According to Butts and Rich (2022), analytical philosophy involves, realistic, scientific examination of data and the nature of truths. Continental philosophy focuses on the history of the past and present with focus on the experience of truth. When pertaining to the POI topic discussed in this paper, analytical philosophy is the preferred philosophical viewpoint. Analytical philosophy is based on a cause-and-effect type of platform. In order to understand SCD we must understand the cause of the disease as well as the effects. To treat SCD we must know the etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of the disease which is classified as analytical data. For example, through numerous studies with numerical data to support, vaccines and prophylactic administration of penicillin has significantly decreased the infection rate of individuals with SCD (Waked et al., 2016). Continental philosophy may be beneficial when discovering the experiences of patients with SCD. When understanding the experiences of a patient with SCD a holistic style of nursing can be utilized. During one qualitative study many patients with SCD described their time in the hospital or urgent care setting as disruptive, overwhelming, and robbery of their autonomy (Coco et al., 2023). Understanding this continental data will encourage a stronger nurse-patient relationship as well as encourage the healthcare system to allow SCD patients to have a voice in their medical care. Incorporating both analytical and continental philosophy can introduce many advantages to advanced nursing care. Providing patients with quantitative studies that provide numerical data support when introducing a new treatment approach will effectively help them in deciding the best treatment plan for themselves. This is an example of using analytical and continental philosophy because the nurse is providing scientific data but also allowing the patient to look back on their experiences as a sickle cell patient before deciding on a treatment. According to White (2022), analytical philosophy provides legitimacy and effectiveness through research while continental offers reflective data on human experiences. Therefore, it is important to consider both philosophical viewpoints while working in healthcare because a combination of multiple viewpoints may provide the best patient experience. Ways of Knowing Barbara Carper developed four fundamental patterns of knowing in 1978. These patterns developed a holistic understanding of nursing practice. According to Butts and Rich (2022), th
