Ethical and Legal Foundations of PMHNP Care Topic: Informed Consent Ethical and legal consideration of Informed consent in the decision-making about the patient (child, adolescent, or adult) who is being treated for a mental health condition by the PMHNSs (Psychiatric mental health nurses). The topic addresses the concerns about informed consent in mental health practice. Informed consent is an ethical and legal requirement to conduct psychotherapy for PMHNP during her clinical practice. Informed consent provided information to the adult patient regarding his mental health and recommended treatment plan(Bipeta, 2019). Informed consent promotes the patient's autonomy; therefore, the patient can refuse the recommended psychotherapy. However, in the case of children or adolescents, parents and guardians have the legal right to consent to the recommended treatment for psychotherapy. Summary The articles covered all the legal and ethical aspects of informed consent in children, adolescents, and adult’s decision-making regarding particular psychotherapy. These articles are specifically focused on the use of informed consent in psychotherapeutic practices. The medical staff and nurse practitioner's attitudes towards ethical and legal issues pertinent to informed consent are elaborated in the articles. Reasons and justifications for considering informed consent before any medical procedure are given with research-based evidence. Limitations of confidentiality and ethical dilemmas related to informing consent usage in psychotherapy settings are discussed in the research articles. The four articles selected for this paper give sufficient knowledge regarding the practice of ethical and legal standards of informed consent in psychiatric mental health practices.
