If we do not ensure autonomy the patient looses their right to make medical choices that are best for them. This is why it is essential to involve patients and their families in all aspects of their care. This will lead to better outcomes becomes it increases the patient’s trust and confidence which will increase the likelihood of of compliance with medical recommendations. For example we had a patient who had been feeling increasingly depressed over the past few months and only agreed to this appointment because of her family history.of a sister who committed suicide. We were able to provide her with tools and education about prevention, symptoms, treatments, possible side effects and consequences
