Relationship of continuing education to competency, attitudes, knowledge, and ANA Scope
and Standards for practice and code of ethics
Continuing education is essential to competency, knowledge, and ANA scope of
standards of practice since the professional guidelines require nurses to comply with mandatory
standards of practice and abide by the code of ethics (American Nurses Association. (n.d).
Continuing nursing education offers higher competency, better skills, and attributes that allow
nurses to practice with ease and provide quality nursing care to patients and clients (Chism,
2016). Accordingly, the ANA scope and standards of practice require nurses to practice within
their scope of competency and adhere to professional standards that require nurses to promote
the interests of patients and offer high-quality care (American Nurses Association, n.d). I believe
continuing education will allow me stay updated on best nursing practices, acquire new skills,
and attitudes that promote the welfare of my patients. I will gain proficiency in new clinical
technologies and quality improvement initiatives that foster the quality of care (Chism, 2016).
Accordingly, continuing education improves managerial and leadership skills that enable nurses
to undertake leadership roles and participate in health care policy formulation and
implementation (Cole, 2017, p 40).
The standards of practice require nurses to offer high quality care to the best of their
expertise and ability. Continuing education is essential in remaining up to date with evidence-
based practices. In addition, continuing education ensures nurses adhere to the code of conduct
and exhibit desired behaviors and attitudes during interprofessional collaboration (PHN, 2020).
