Philosophy Paper
The four nursing metaparadigms serve as the foundation for defining the nursing profession. They contribute to forming philosophical frameworks that influence nursing’s comprehension and development as a scientific area of study. Most significantly, these ideas influence how people see or consider nursing as a profession. These concepts are fundamental to my philosophical approach to nursing since I consider them to be the cornerstones of nursing. Nursing, in my opinion, is all about the patient. Put differently, I see nursing as a patient-centered profession and field in which a patient’s whole wellbeing is prioritized. As such, my nursing philosophy is constantly influenced by Jean Watson’sWatson’s Human Caring Theory. Regarding my nursing philosophy, this paper seeks to reflect on the four nursing meta-paradigm concepts.
Nursing Practice
My knowledge of nursing has grown since I was a child. When I was younger, I assumed that everybody dressed in nursing garb was a nurse. Nursing, in my opinion, is the profession of providing care to persons who are not physically or mentally healthy, as well as the ill. As a nurse, I must be encouraged by conscience and follow the law when providing the nursing care. The impact of the nursing to the society, individual and communities must be beneficial at best. If this is a risky procedure, I must believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. Recently we are faced with an ethical dilemma whether to inject Pfizer vaccines. This follows the headlines that it involved serious blood clots in elderly people. As a nurse who took the Nightingale pledge, the phrase “to not give any harmful drug” must be observed, I am aware that the drug will provide protection and has a higher percentage of benefits, compared to the risks. Subjectively speaking, dilemma such as this in nursing can make me doubt my own judgment. This is the reason I should continue reading and studying because the medicine evolves and improves, so does my knowledge to ensure a research-based and clinically accepted nursing practice.
Environment
This is the concept of nursing that centers on the atmosphere in which the patient gets care. Internal and external elements comprise the environment. I believe that how individuals respond their surroundings has a significant impact on health and wellbeing. Relationships with family and friends may also have an impact on a person’s wellbeing. Additional elements that constitute the environment in my opinion, are economic and social concerns. In my view, the internal environment relates to the context at the health institution and how it functions. For example, the health institution should give the patient with a pleasant and hygienic environment in which patients are well-cared for. I believe that the healthcare environment is a vital element of giving care, as s it is the first aspect a patient observes and acknowledges, irrespective of quality care. As such, I advocate for a patient-friendly setting in which patients can recuperate without problems. To improve health, I feel it is critical to modify external environmental elements such as economic position and culture to match patient needs.
Health
Health, in my opinion, is defined as the absence of injury or sickness. In relation to the environment component, the health component must address physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual health. When the patient is an individual, it is easier to assess these sectors of health but when the nursing care is being provided to a group of people of the community, difficulties occur. This calls for a deeper understanding of their health. I feel that although anticipation is avoided as it may interfere with cultural appropriateness, generalization is needed to ensure continuance of nursing care. I see them as a whole who needs our intervention. The diversity of the community makes their susceptibility to the varying disease. For example, the African-American are more prone to cardiovascular problems compared to Asians and I must identify this need properly. From my insight, although there are differences in the health aspect, our goal must be the same for all. It is the removal of danger and promotion of health. We must provide nursing care where they will safe and promote reassurance so the next time they feel sick, they will not hesitate to seek medical care.
