Evidence 1 The Michigan Nurses Association indicates that forced overtime or unlimited working hours is detrimental to the nurses and their patients (Bowling, 2018). The laws of Michigan should seek to protect its citizens and nurses by introducing maximum work shifts with possible short breaks. The lack of proper guidelines on work hours has made careers in primary care unattractive to young generations of American citizens, leading to a potential danger of a lower workforce.
Evidence 2 A 2017 committee on nurses being overworked noted that nurses within the state worked 12-18 hour shifts with little or no breaks in between (Persaud et al., 2017). It also found out that 18 states, Illinois and Texas, had implemented laws that dictated minimum work hours for nurses and the maximum number of patients a nurse would be assigned. This move allowed for an increase in the number of patients treated and recoveries achieved due to decreased fatigue and improved focus on duties. Adequate rest translates to a healthy brain, motivation, and productivity increase in service delivery.
