Case Study: An Asian American Woman. Diagnosis-Bipolar Disorder

Introduction

Bipolar disorder as per Carvalho, Firth, and Vieta (2020) is a mental health condition that causes a fluctuation in one’s moods, functioning, or energy. The condition may present one with depressive symptoms and mania with irritable moods. The case that is under consideration is for a 26-year-old Korean woman who has come to the health setting for her appointment after 21 days of treatment. The client was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. The patient has described her moods to be fantastic and that she can sleep for up to 5 hours although she does not like sleeping since it is not fun. The overall health of the patient shows that she is in good health but has been seen to be positive for the CYP2D6*10 allele. The plan is for the patient to be prescribed three medications and the reason for use of this medication. The other section focused on the investigation is on the ethical issues that may impact the process of communication and treatment of the patient.

Why did you not select the other two options provided in the exercise?

The other medications that could have been selected are Seroquel and lithium. The failure to select Seroquel is attributed to the side effects of the medication such as the risks of getting dry mouth, constipation, and issues of being dizzy (Li et al., 2019). This may therefore increase the risks of noncompliance to the use of medication by the patient. The use of Seroquel as well could increase appetite and hence could result in the patient adding weight….
