Application of Theoretical Concepts to Research
Theories are largely applied in nursing practice to help in the process of provision of patient care services in a manner that the patients can be able to get quality and efficient care. The steps that are taken in the process of handling the patient care services are supposed to be done based on the critical examination of the needs of patients. In the examination of the patient care services, theories help nurses to get a glimpse of how to improve on the processes and hence enhance the chance of satisfaction of patients. The theory that is focused on in this paper is Jean Watson’s theory of human caring.
Background
Theorist’s Background
The theory was developed by Jean Watson. She was born on June 10, 1940, in the Appalachian Mountains. Her original name was Margaret Jean Harmon. She grew up in an extended family in Welch in West Virginia. She was married to Douglas and moved to Colorado where she was blessed with two daughters (Watson & Woodward, 2020). She earned various degrees from her nursing education. She got her bachelor’s degree in 1964, Master of Science in nursing psychiatric and mental health in 1966, and her Ph.D. in 1973. She was serving at the moment in the faculty and later became the dean of graduate studies.
Phenomenon of Concern The main concern in the theory is on the process of promotion of health, prevention of illnesses, restoring the health of patients, and provision of care to the persons who are suffering. The view of the patient is that the attainment of holistic health for the patient is the main focus of practice for nurses (Turkel, Watson, & Giovannoni, 2018).
