Nursing Education : The IOM report reflects evidence that education level of nurses affects health care delivery and outcomes, hence the IOM committee calls for nurses to achieve higher levels of education and suggests that they be educated in a new ways that better prepare them to meet the needs of the population. IOM recommended 80% of nurses be prepared with baccalaureate degrees by 2020, or an 80/20 skill mix of staff. With the attainment of a BSN degree, the nurse becomes more competent and skilled to deliver high-quality care. Also has competencies in other areas like research and evidence-based practice, health policy, teamwork and collaboration, as well as competency in specific areas like community and public health and geriatrics. With improvement in the education system, Standards are set to enter in the profession, profound change in education improved lifelong learning of nurses.
Nursing Leadership: The IOM report emphasizes the development of leadership positions for nurses that connect nurses’ capacity to lead changes into the new healthiness, wellness program. The Nurses on Boards Coalition was created to help meet this goal. The coalition set an objective of having 10,000 nurses serving on corporate , health-related and other boards, panels and commissions by 2020. Currently 5,757 nurses who are serving with the boards have registered with the coalition .
