Cannabis 101 for Nurses Literature Review The CINAHL database was used to search for articles related to this assignment. The search term “endocannabinoid system” found 119 articles. The next search term used was “endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome” which resulted in 2 articles. “Cannabis delivery routes” directly did not yield any results however CINAHL’s smarttext feature did produce 114 results, some of which appeared promising. “How to use CBD” resulted in 2 articles. Articles published before 2015 were eliminated so only the latest research was reviewed. How Cannabis Works in the Body Every where you go these days you see signs advertising the sale of CBD products, so what is CBD and why is it all the craze. Is it just a bunch of hype or does science support the claims being made by those selling the CBD products. “Cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonintoxicating extract from the Cannibis sativa family of plants (which includes hemp and marijuana). CBD is just one of the family of chemicals known as the cannabinoids, shown to have anti-inflammatory, antipsychotic, anti-anxiety, and anticonvulsant properties as well as homeostatic properties (meaning it maintains healthy balance in cells)” (Smith, K, 2019). CBD products are advertised to be used in the treatment of pain, gastrointestinal disorders, arthritis, depression, anxiety and a multitude of other disorders. So how can one product treat such a vast number of different types of conditions? The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) Research has found that the endocannabinoid system is found in not only humans but all mammals, it has even been found in birds and fish as well.
