IOM Future of nursing recommendations for attaining higher education levels,
professional certification, and the timeline for accomplishment
A critical review and evaluation of my current education and competencies indicate a
need for enrolling for advanced degrees and professional certification. Accreditation and
certification as a Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) are
paramount since it is a testimony of an individual’s competency and skills to undertake practice
roles and adhere to professional standards of practice. I will seek professional certification by
registering and passing licensing exams administered by theTexas nurses licensing board (Texas
Board of Nursing, 2019). I believe the certification will enhance my employability prospects and
enable me to care for patients in all phases of the health and wellness continuum. I believe the
certification will allow me to work in medical-surgical areas as a Critical care nurse. I plan to
attain this certification within eighteen months.
I desire to enroll for a Masters degree in nursing to further my education, managerial
abilities, and leadership skills. An advanced degree is vital in gaining detailed knowledge of
evidence-based clinical nursing skills, developing nurse leadership, and enhancing career
progression (Chism, 2016). I am determined to engage in continuing nursing education that will
assist me to attain job promotion and work as a nurse manager in different hospital settings such
as dialysis units and surgical wards (McNiff, 2018). The estimated completion timeframe for this
career development goal is three years.
