Problem
In no more than 250 words, describe the problem, who is affected, and the current ramifications. Explain the consequences if the issue continues.
The state of Michigan has no law that regulates the maximum allowed number of working hours for its registered nurses (Persaud et al., 2017). Considered the most severe issue by nurses within the state, it poses a challenge to patient-centered care and nurses’ health. There is little concern shown by both the corporate sector and the state government’s legislative arm working to handle and resolve this issue. In addition to the overtime imposed on these nurses in hospitals and healthcare facilities, there is no explicit provision for the maximum number of patients a nurse can be assigned. This problem has affected several stakeholders in the health sector, with nurses and patients bearing a direct negative impact. There has been reduced safety in safe patient care as nurses are often overworked; the long hours and a high number of patients per nurse lead to fatigue and less productivity (Persaud et al., 2017). The ramifications of this problem are; an unmotivated workforce, poorly treated patients, low quality of life for patients and nurses, and lack of proper financial performance due to poor productivity by the healthcare workforce.
