Health IT Topic: The Mobile World of Telehealth Chamberlain College of Nursing NR512: Fundamentals of Nursing Informatics

In today’s healthcare system, nursing informatics technology is the foundation of the future in patient care. With patient care as the primary focus in the development of new concepts and knowledge in healthcare technology, it is essential for healthcare providers to understand and implement nursing informatics. Telehealth is a rapidly growing technological advancement that can provide efficient patient care through electronic communication. The introduction of technology, mainly the invention of computers, has certainly altered the way patient care is delivered in the medical field. The dramatic evolution of telehealth encompasses the use of technology to enhance patient care in the most efficient way possible. According to Serwe, Hersch, Pickens, & Pancheri (2017), telehealth is a growing method of delivering care or medical intervention through the use of mobile devices such computers, tablets, and cellular phones. Without the hands-on component, patients can enjoy specialized medical care and actively engage in their health management in the comfort of their own homes. The expansion of telehealth within various settings ranging from doctor’s offices, hospitals, clinics, and individual homes will have a tremendous impact on the future practice of advanced practice nurse (APN) roles. The advantages of utilizing telehealth can help reduce travel burdens and improve health outcomes while decreasing healthcare costs (Serwe et al., 2017). However, telehealth can also be a disadvantage for individuals who prefer a more personal, “face-to-face” interaction with the physician. This paper will examine the rationale for choosing this specific topic, how telehealth impacts the APN practice in a positive manner, the pros and cons of the emerging technology of telehealth, how informatics skills were used in the process of writing this assignment, and recommendations for the future. As the medical world constantly changes, technology plays an
