Promoting evidence-based practice among nursing staff is a responsible task for the management of healthcare institutions. As an example of such an activity, the case of a nurse from the surgical department will be reviewed. She asked to clarify the peculiarities and ambiguous aspects of such a diagnosis as a disturbed sleep pattern. In addition to identifying relevant databases and platforms containing the necessary information for the given diagnosis, determining optimal communication strategies is necessary to promote an effective research process and maintain productive collaboration with nurses.
To stimulate research into the aforementioned diagnosis, appropriate communication strategies should be applied. According to Barrat (2018), one of the most effective approaches is encouragement, which implies supervisor’s control over the activities of the staff. This practice can be implemented through the mechanisms of reward, involvement, and cohesion. As additional communication strategies, Nusbaum et al. (2019) mention “providing bulleted summarized information, repeating important information, using supplemental materials and aids to support understanding,” and some other relevant approaches (p. 938). These practices can be valuable as coordination tools that, at the same time, stimulate nurses’ independent research activities. To collaborate with the nurse to access specific resources, one can note the strategy of individual motivation that Horntvedt et al. (2018) consider. Stimulating a productive research process through this approach is a potentially efficient tool to increase the nurse’s interest and competence due to enhancing her personal responsibility.
To conduct an effective research process and find a rationale for an effective intervention to address the diagnosis of a disturbed sleep pattern, reviewing specialized nursing journals is an objective solution. For this purpose, the analysis of available medical databases is a relevant activity. As additional sites, nursing guidelines can be brought in to assess colleagues’ recommendations. Blogs and forums are not reliable data sources, and the use of articles in specialized scholarly journals is the most appropriate solution. In the surgical department in question, utilizing the internal library to find resources is a convenient approach due to the open access to the necessary resources and an opportunity to find publications on the given topic.
To determine the optimal resources for finding relevant information on the diagnosis of a disturbed sleep pattern, one should identify which of them contain information directly about the issue in question. The most comprehensive studies may be found in the Nursing and Allied Health database, and this site is the most appropriate. The PubMed Central database ranks second in terms of the completeness of the necessary information. The journal called Sleep contains relevant findings on this diagnosis and can be utilized as a resource to find data about a disturbed sleep pattern. The NHS website is a platform that includes useful information on a variety of nursing topics, including the analysis of patient sleep problems. Finally, the online resource Nurses Zone offers narrow terminology regarding nursing diagnoses, and one can find references to a disturbed sleep pattern on this site.
As criteria for the selection of the aforementioned resources to find a research rationale for the diagnosis of a disturbed sleep pattern, the aspects of information richness and material credibility are taken into account. The chosen sources provide an opportunity to obtain relevant data and address the issue from multiple perspectives, including symptomatology and potentially effective interventions. The first two resources are the databases of scholarly nursing journals. The journal called Sleep selected as a standalone source provides information on various problems and causes of sleep disturbance, including those that are relevant to patients in surgical departments. The last two online platforms include more general information regarding the selected problem, which, nevertheless, allows finding the necessary materials. Thus, the resources presented are useful for the research process on the nursing diagnosis of a disturbed sleep pattern.
