Risk assessment for prescribing medication to the elderly is important. It is important to understand if the patient is able to be medication compliant, medication indication and having patient involvement with the treatment plan. Another risk for prescribing Effexor is the possibility of overdosing and how it will affect the patient's heart. Liver function is very important to understand so the patient doesn't become toxic. In this case I would consider the patient comorbidities and current diagnosis to assist with decision making for a proper treatment plan. Benefits of Effexor in the elderly patients would tend to not only lean towards the treatment of GAD, but treatment resistant depression, adult ADHD, somatic symptom and reduction in suicidality in patients (Stahl et al., 2021). The risk of treating elderly patients with Propranolol are bradycardia, hypotension, weight gain, dizziness, joint pain, urinary retention and increased risk of a stroke (Stahl et al., 2021). The benefits of using Propranolol could reduce tremors which could lead to an increase of daily function/activities, reduction of aggression and patients could be more cooperative.
