Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
Advancement in technology has enhanced production in various sectors, healthcare included. There are many challenges in healthcare that prevent healthcare organizations from achieving their primary goal, which is to provide high quality and safe care to the patients. Among the several challenges in healthcare, medication errors are a common occurrence. There are increased incidences of medication errors in numerous facilities despite measures in place to prevent them. Medication errors occur at various stages in healthcare. However, the incidences of errors occurring during medication administration are the leading. It is crucial to address this issue because it has significant negative consequences on the patients, healthcare providers, and the entire facility.

This has been my area of interest because I always listen to nurses explaining their experiences during drug administration as sometimes having near misses or having forgotten a particular guideline making them afraid this might adversely affect the patient and their reputations when it is determined they were responsible. It is a very sensational topic, and despite the adverse consequences such errors cause, there is a brighter side. These errors are preventable when the correct measures are put in place to address the various factors causing them. With the advancement in technology, several applications have been developed, which has enhanced operations within health facilities by enhancing workflow, quality and safety of care the patients receive. Incorporating electronic medication administration with barcoding has enhanced efficiency in healthcare, especially in preventing medication errors associated with medication administration, thereby enhancing patient safety and outcomes. I used a thorough research process to help me develop detailed, reliable and accurate information regarding the research topic. I first determined the problem the research purposed to address, which was the medication errors occurring during medication administration. I then reviewed relevant literature which I believed contained the most relevant, accurate and updated information regarding the research topic. I then developed objectives that I expected the research articles to address appropriately.
I then went ahead to analyze the information provided by the various articles, which enabled me to come up with suitable recommendations on the way forward on how organizations can incorporate and implement this new technology into their care practice. I wanted to use a database that was reliable and would provide accurate information regarding the study topic. The two databases were PubMed and Wolters Kluwer. I ensured that the authors of the articles were recognized, with undoubted qualifications. I also ensured the publications were up to date by setting the range of search to be within the last five years. To narrow down my search, I used keywords such as medication errors, electronic medication administration, medication safety and barcoding,

Debono, D., Taylor, N., Lipworth, W., Greenfield, D., Travaglia, J., Black, D., & Braithwaite, J. (2017). Applying the theoretical domains framework to identify barriers and targeted interventions to enhance nurses’ electronic medication management systems in two Australian hospitals. Implementation Science, 12(1), 1-13.
The article elaborates on the impacts of medication errors on the cost of treatment and patient safety. It highlights how Electronic Medication Management Systems (EMMS) have proved to reduce such medication errors. The article further emphasizes the major barriers preventing nurses from using such technologies as intended. The authors attribute this to inefficient implementation, which requires the various care providers to adapt to these new changes by changing their existing practices, routines, and behaviour. This is quite challenging and requires time and adequate training and education. Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) tool has been used in the study to identify these barriers and the various interventions that are beneficial in addressing the issue.
It implies various factors as contributing to difficulties implementing the new technology. Such factors include; environmental factors and availability of the necessary devices such as computers and professional factors, which highlighted the nurses’ attitudes and their willingness to incorporate the new technology into their practice. The article highlights the ben
