As a recent RN graduate transitioning into a master’s level program, I had many questions and emotions second guessing if I should begin such a demanding program.  However, attending Walden University and completing the undergraduate portion of my program has been an easy transition.   Unfortunately, the questions and concerns have increased with taking this course as my first master’s level course.  My number one question revolved around how different the expectations will be and if there is the same support available? I also questioned if I had the tools as mentioned in this week’s video to accomplish my lifelong goal of becoming a PMHNP.

Becoming a Successful Scholar

After reading the 10 Traits of a Successful Online learner I realized there are several areas I need to work on. The areas I require improvement in are self-direction and self-efficiency, time management and confidence. I have also experienced lack of motivation and procrastination recently.  As a single parent time management has become more difficult during the pandemic due to my daughter requiring more hands on with schoolwork.  A study on conducted on procrastination and time management as it relates to academic stress revealed “time management skills are essential, and students require help with effective time management to improve academic performance” (Nayak, 2019, p.1485).  Another area is confidence because I always question my abilities and allow pride to get in the way of asking for help and networking with others for clarity. I am currently seeking study groups and resources that can help with the areas I continue to struggle with. In addition, I plan to utilize the information provided in the resources along with the individuals identified in week 1.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I am confident that I will be successful in completing this course and developing skills to complete my goal of becoming a PMHNP.  According to Kauffman (2015) proper teaching methods, support, and structure can aid in student performance and satisfaction. Walden University provides these tools and if I put the effort into learning new skills and utilize the resources available, I can accomplish my career goals
