Several neurotransmitters are involved in GAD such as serotonin, glutamate, gamma-amino butyric acid, Cholecystokinnin, Adenosine and many others. However, some of these neurotransmitters are inhibitory while others are excitatory. Therefore, these neurotransmitters play a key role in up-regulation or down-regulation of GAD. Neurotransmitters in the brain modulate the neural circuitry involved in anxiety. For instance, the dysregulation of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, especially the GABAA variant, tend to elevate the amygdala activity in the brain, thus causing GAD.
