Discuss the key elements of person-centered care for people with intellectual disability and provide evidence-based rationales. Relate this information to either Erin OR Michelle. (30marks) The key elements of person-centred care for people with intellectual disability are: A. Person and Family Engagement Involvement of the family and friends is most needed for a person with an intellectual disability. A person with an intellectual disability has limited verbal communication. They have limited thinking skills, so they need their friends and family by their side for their support during the treatment(Jameel et al., 2020). The people like Michelle feel hard to cope with the new environment and they always panic so family support and communication can help them to adjust and feel less stressed. The involvement of family will help them to feel at home and get a homely environment. The doctor didn’t let Michelle keep in touch with her mother during the treatment which affected her mental and psychological well-being making the disease worse B. Care There should be proper care planning for the patients so that risk of hazards can be avoided (Palmer, 1995). The cause for the fear and anxiety of the patient should be identified. A person with an intellectual disability tends to have aggressive and violent behaviour so they need to have properly cared for(Sappok et al., 2019). The alerting staff or bed alarm can be used in case of violent behaviour by the client is shown. The cause of the violent behaviour should be understood by the health behaviour. The screaming while sitting on the floor by Michelle was ignored by the doctor and other medical professionals assuming it to be a psychological disorder caused Michelle to suffer even more due to the failure to distinguish the actual problem.
