Discuss the challenges that either Erin OR Michelle and their mothers 1 experienced whilst seeking hospital care, and synthesize your argument with the literature about hospital experiences for people with intellectual disability. (20 marks)

As people with intellectual disabilities happen to show destructive behaviour and lack verbal communication, they are unable to talk about what they are feeling the doctor assumed that it was normal (Ruddick et al., 2015). With the lack of government policy and service development in the Australian health care system, there is a disturbing pattern of unnecessary death for people with intellectual disabilities. The average life expectancy of people with an intellectual disability is just 54 years old as they are the potential risk factor due to the lack of good health care. This is another challenge Ein has to face which is the lack of proper healthcare for patients with intellectual disabilities (Latteck & Bruland, 2020). The negligence of doctors to properly treat the patient shows the health inequalities which result in the death of each 1 in 3 disabled patients. The health inequalities and lack of good healthcare, Erin's condition got even worse. The people like Michelle who have an intellectual disability have some potential risk factors like Cardiometabolic risk factors, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and Obesity. Due to the inequalities and lack of proper health care by the health professionals of the hospital she died from Meningitis. Meningitis is a liquid membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cords of the brain. It is mostly caused due to the lack of proper hygiene in the surrounding. After autopsying, it was found due to poor hygiene and health care of Michelle she died(Bouzid et al., 2018). The cause of her death was solely the fault of the healthcare professionals and hospitals. The proper management of the hospital is also the big challenge Michelle had to face. Erin`s mother who could witness and understand her daughter's pain the healthcare professionals fail to address it and she was made to leave, and Michelle was discharged early. The hospital discharging in a critical situation shows the irresponsibility of the hospital toward the patients.

Erin`s mother 2 couldn’t convince the healthcare professionals and they were not ready to accept the fault from their side which caused Michelle to die from a preventive disease(Ciria-Suarez et al., 2021). Erin`s mother was the only person to understand her daughter's pain but the inequal health service of the hospital for the intellectual disability patient made her leave forcefully. Hospital error, healthcare professionals, inequality in health treatment and service development in healthcare are the challenges that every patient like Michelle and her mother must face during treatment in the hospital.
