Describe how individual learning styles affect the degree to which a learner can understand or perform educational activities. Discuss the importance of an educator identifying individual learning styles and preferences when working with learners.

Assignment 1: VARK Summary and Learning Styles

Introduction

The acronym “VARK” refers to four modalities of learning that include visual, auditory,
writing/reading, and kinesthetic. The questionnaire enables learners to understand their preferred
learning style and acknowledges that students have differing approaches on how they perceive
and process information (Cuevas & Dawson, 2018, p 41). The preferred learning mode
influences behavior and level of motivation if matched with appropriate learning strategies.
Visual learning entails use of maps and images while auditory learning entails lecturers and
group discussions. Read/write learning style involves use of words by avid reading or note taking
while kinesthetic style involves tactical representations of information and use of case examples.

VARK Questionnaire Summary

My complete VARK questionnaire scores and results are as follows and indicate that my
preferred learning style is kinesthetic, which is a active learning style.
Scores were;
Visual = 14, Auditory = 15, Read/Write = 16 and Kinesthetic = 20
The VARK questionnaire scores indicate that I am a participatory learner who takes
active role in learning in order to attain better educational outcomes. The results indicate that I
learn best through understanding how things work and using real life applications. I prefer case
studies and real life examples plus photographs in illustrating new ideas. The main advantages
are that I can learn new ideas within a short period and master content due to high retention of
data.
