According to the American Association of Collegesof Nursing, the number of nurses quitting the profession each year has been steadily increasing from over 40,000 in 2010 to over 80,000 by 2020. (AACN).One of the ongoing issues in nursing is the scarcity of nurses. This contributes to nurses being overworked and stretched thin.Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, there were a lot of healthcare workers who serves the frontline during that time (Donzelli, 2020). With the wave of infection starting to increase again, nurses who got sick from the first wave of the pandemic are still experiencing stress and burnout not only physically but also mentally, brought about by this virus.However, nurses have been experiencing long hours of work prior to COVID 19 and now we have seen many nurses, who have decided to leave the field entirely. Nurses appear to have decided that the stress and long hours they endured while caring for patients during the previous surge are something they don't want to undergo again (Sos, 2021). In order to alleviate the problem of the nursing shortage, having the management or supervisors who are in charge of cultivating a work environment should show their support to the nursing personnel and encourages experienced nurses to stay on. An example of which is rewarding nurses who continue to work, and reward senior nursing staff for mentoring new nurses. In addition to simply improving compensation and benefits packages, programs that promote or encourage staff to bring their concern might provide an impact on employee retention as management is showing that they care.
