My preferred specialty is the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and my second-preferred specialization is the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. These two are quite different and only match in the need to have potential nurses in either of the areas have a Master of Science in Nursing degree. However, the two differ on different fronts. One, as a PMHNP, one mainly deals with mental health issues of patients and their families (Walden, 2022). On the other hand, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) offer primary healthcare to children right from birth to when they are young adults (Walden, 2022). Walden (2022) indicates that PNPs need to amass knowledge to deal with “infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.” The difference here lies in the ability to specialize for PMHNPs, and the wider focus allowed for PNPs. The second difference lies in the ability of PMHNPs to deal with patients of all ages, while PNPs only deal with children to young adults (Walden, 2022).
