I reflected on my husband’s place of work as an example of many concepts outlined in the text. My husband is employed as a sales manager at a very large, well-renowned organization. The environment is a traditional one, emphasized by the rigid dress code, professional office setup, and strict work processes. In spite of the longstanding policies and notions, some elements of the company have begun to change with the evolution of culture and the economy. For decades, when revenue and results are not meeting the expectations of the management team, mandatory morning and afternoon meetings are held. During these meetings, each member of the sales team is required to outline a plan for that day’s upcoming sales transactions. The objective of these meetings is to increase profits by changing what’s not working and emphasizing what does. While the staff members at this organization have families and social lives, and are paid for 7.5 hours of their day, more often than not the management team expects each employee to work past their shift at a caliber for which they are not getting paid.
