Bullying and Psychology
One of the key issues facing society and young people today in particular is bullying. It includes physical abuse, name-calling, written or verbal abuse, and coercion and can result in unwelcome consequences such as poor academic performance (McCarty et al., 2016). Bullying has been elevated in the advent of social media where people can insult others from the comfort of their homes through devices such as smartphones and computers. Given that bullying is learned behavior, psychology can be an integral solution to prevent this menace that affects many young people in the U.S. Specifically, applied behavior analysis (ABA), can change how young people view others and in the process help reduce bullying.
I would combine behaviorism and humanism schools of thought in trying to address the problem of bullying. Behaviorism considers human behavior as learned and with the understanding that bullying is learned, it can be changed with the application of ABA.
