APRN Professional Development Plan Paper

Advanced practice nurses (APRNs) have various responsibilities, and each state in the US has its guidelines that guide the scope of practice for APN’s. In New Jersey (NJ), nurse practitioners precisely provide care independently. As a nurse in the state of NJ, an individual may perform diagnostic tests and treat patients without the oversight of physicians (Chesney & Duderstadt, 2017). This paper intends to explore the NPs’ practice requirement, competencies, roles, procedure for scholarship engagement, and leadership skills to act as leaders and advocates of holistic, safe, and quality care.

Core Competencies

As an APRN practicing in New Jersey, one of the core competencies required is to become competent in leadership, which is essential when working in a palliative setting. Besides, I intend to improve my competency in ethics and having the knowledge of patient advocacy (Curley, 2019). As an APRN it is vital to have the capability to think and lead the interdisciplinary teams to articulate a plan of care that will make it easier to transit when patients are medically stable critically.

Roles and Responsibilities of APNs

Moreover, in New Jersey, APRNs’ roles include providing safe, cost-effective, and high-quality care to clients. Further, in New Jersey, APRNs currently practice autonomously. Besides, to become a nurse leader in NJ, one needs to have good communication skills to communicate effectively with patients and their families. The nurse also needs to engage with that interdisciplinary team to develop a relationship and offer safe care. Moreover, when the APRN can promote and implement positive, open, and efficient communication, it indicates that the APRNs are self-aware and can lead the healthcare team (Curley, 2019). As leaders, the APRNs must provide continued support, be caring, and show empathy and respect.

Scope of Practice

To practice in New Jersey, an APRN need to possess a current NJ “Registered Nurse license”. Students must possess a BSN to apply for an MSN program in New Jersey. To apply for an MSN, one must hold accreditation from an approved nursing association in the US Department of Education. This MSN prepares RNs for advanced nurse practice (Cassiani et al., 2018). The program prepares nurses to become ready for their scope of practice to include acquiring six credits in pharmacology based on regulated substances. Students are also reminded to specialize in “intensive care, medicine and surgery, and the operating room.”

Overall, APRNs are the key and future stakeholders in health care in any state that with nursing practice in the US. APRNs play an important role in the provision of safety and improved care. However, various states have distinct requirements for the nurses’ scope of practice. The APRNs are also highly respected healthcare practitioners with various core competencies and can offer quality care. The APRNs also act as leaders with various leadership skills.
