Why is it necessary for nurses to reflect?

We've all had conversations in which the flaws of systems, companies, or other people are identified and simple remedies for making things better are proposed. Unfortunately, the same cannot always be true about ourselves: we rarely engage in talks that highlight our own flaws, let alone offer suggestions for improving our performance as nurses. If nothing else, reflection allows us to consider the repercussions and consequences of our behaviour and actions. gibbs reflective cycle A organised type of reflection can help you recognise your role in an occurrence and begin to realise how the incident could have been avoided entirely. A plan of action can be developed based on this to help you with your personal and professional development. To grow is to improve. When something is reported to have improved, it is said to be developing. Development is inextricably linked with thinking; thinking about how things are today and how they can be better; and thinking about things in this way is to participate in reflection. Thus, reflection is a crucial component of development, and as previously said, most of us engage in this type of activity on a daily basis. We may not generally refer to this as "reflection," but when we consider how things are and how they could be better, we are reflecting on what is and what might be. Personal growth entails personal betterment, whereas professional development entails improving patient experiences with health and nursing care. So, in a professional sense, engaging in contemplation (thinking about how things are and how they might be improved for patients) must be supported by action (doing something to make things better for patients). As a result, reflection is an essential component of both personal and professional development. Gibbs Reflection Model Gibbs cycle of reflection
