Response: The main events of my internship this summer are going to be Conscious Discipline including teaching it and using it. Conscious Discipline is a type of social and emotional learning that teaches kids to be able to identify their emotions so they can better respond to situations instead of simply react to them. Collaborating with my supervisor we decided that I would be able to work with the kindergarten class at the St. Mark summer program and produce activities to help teach them the various techniques of conscious discipline. This makes me overly excited because in the future I hope to work as a school psychologist. Something I am extremely interested in is behavior and being able to work with children on conscious discipline is a beneficial thing. I not only am getting experience working with kids, specifically the age group I want to work with in the future(elementary), but I also am getting a chance to directly collaborate with them on their behavior. I also am going to be "on call" for when a different classroom has a kid that is struggling with his behavior. I get to go in and work with that kid and try to help them work through the issue so that they can take away a pleasant experience from St. Mark. I also will be helping my supervisor, a program coordinator, with anything she may need whether it be something in the office or help with a child/situation. All these pieces come together to make an excellent internship experience about which I am really excited. This past week I helped get everything set up and running for the start of the program, which is this Monday, I was taught a lot about conscious discipline and how we teach it to kids as well as ways that we utilize conscious discipline in the classroom. This upcoming week I am looking forward to getting to work with kids on these skills and behaviors
