The reading Andersen,M.J., Williamson, A.B., Fernando, P., Eades, S. & Redman, S. (2018) ‘"They took the land, now we’re fighting for a house": Aboriginal perspectives about urban housing disadvantage', Housing Studies , 33:4, 635-660 uses Aboriginal perspectives to understand why housing disadvantage is occurring in Western Sydney. From these perspectives, five (5) key reasons for housing disadvantage are identified. They are: racism, poverty, neighbourhood marginalisation, insufficient government response, and disempowerment.
Using the reading, describe one way Aboriginal Australians experience each reason for housing
disadvantage. Note: Do not simply copy/paste participants’ quotes.
Please respond to the five reasons for housing disadvantage:
a) Racism example
(1 mark)
Aboriginal Australians often experience racism in the housing market, which can
limit their access to suitable housing. Real estate agents, landlords, or property
managers may discriminate against them based on their Indigenous identity,
leading to reduced options for housing and potentially higher rent prices.
Discrimination can also affect their ability to secure rental agreements or
mortgages, exacerbating housing disadvantages.
b) Poverty example
(1 mark)
Many Aboriginal individuals and families face socioeconomic challenges that make it
difficult to afford adequate housing. Low-income households often struggle to pay
for rental or mortgage payments, which may result in overcrowded living conditions
or reliance on temporary or unstable housing arrangements. Poverty can limit their
ability to access suitable housing options or invest in property maintenance
