Social Problems in Society and Culture: Social Status and Homelessness

Homelessness in this country is a huge problem, you can see homeless people in most major cities and towns. Some groups of people have a higher rate of homelessness than that of the countries' average rates. Native Americans are one of these groups I want to talk about. I am Native American and do spend time on the reservation you don't see a lot of homeless people but that does not mean they are not there. What leads Native Americans becoming homeless at a higher rate? There are several factors that can lead to homelessness. Probably the most common stereotype of chronically homeless people is that they are drug and alcohol addicts. Addiction is one of the top 10 causes of homelessness along with mental health, job loss, domestic violence and despair. These all contribute to homelessness with a lack of funding for areas with a higher poverty rate to help with housing is making it where some people can't afford to pay rent or a mortgage they are foreclosed on or evicted. In the Native American community most homeless people are a different kind of homeless they are known as doubling up which is taking in family and friends who would otherwise risk homelessness(Homelessness in Indian Country Is a Hidden, but Critical, Problem, 2017). Native American communities are a very tight knit culture so they will take in homeless friends and family. "People go from one family member's home to another. Everyone's homeless around here, but they just stay with family members and extended families until they get kicked out. It's not good—they are not living in the street, but it's still not good" (Homelessness in Indian Country Is a Hidden, but Critical, Problem, 2017). 1 in about every 200 American Indians are homeless but most of them are doubled up but they are still homeless living with someone else till they are no longer welcome
