Evidence-based Nursing Practice and Population Health It is obvious that evidence-informed nursing practice has a substantial impact on discovering and implementing approaches to improve patient care. The three-pronged strategy, which combines strong research with clinical competence and patient engagement, has the potential to improve overall population health. According to a well-known evidence-informed nursing guide, the combination of research with clinical experience leads to better clinical decision making. However, as indicated by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), adopting good research leads to better decision making when developing public policies and practices. According to ODPHP, which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, "there is demand for evidence at many levels." This includes practitioners as well as senior executives in government and health care organizations who "use it to set priorities and make policy and funding decisions." According to ODPHP's "Healthy People Initiative" for 2020, combining proven research with clinical experience helps avoid the problems of developing treatments and strategies without strong evidence. For example, in the 1980s, a breast cancer treatment was deployed without sufficient testing. Eventually, study demonstrated that it was useless and caused to the untimely deaths of thousands of women. Many routine screening tests have been eliminated as a result of evidence-informed practice, which has improved public health. Evidence suggests that systematic screening causes false positives and undue psychological harm in some circumstances. Two separate studies found that standard testing is inaccurate: one for abdominal aortic aneurysms in women and another for males aged 65 to 75 who have never smoked.
