Powerlessness can be defined as having a lack of ability to participate in decision making that
can affect lifes conditions. According to Young powerlessness refers to the ‘working class’.
Powerlessness can be experienced in many aspects of life which include the workplace, society
and the home. Within Australia powerlessness can be seen with the ongoing challenges faced
by the indigenous communities. Powerlessness can be seen in many aspects of their lives such
as health disparities as indigenous individuals experience higher rates of chronic disease and
there is a life expectancy gap. Powerlessness can also be seen for indigenous people within
education as there is lower educational attainment and limited opportunities for higher education
or skilled employment
