Capstone Project Topic and Approval Nursing Shortage and High Turnover One of the most identified issues in healthcare, particularly in nursing, is the nursing shortages across the country that continues to rise with every day that passes. Not only are the nursing shortages affecting hospitals, clinics and private offices are also being affected greatly by the shortages and high turnover. The national critical shortage of registered nurses is expected to continue until 2025, and the damages of nursing burnout isn’t possible with hiring of new nurses as the rate of graduation is less than the rate of need (Bong, 2019). Currently, I work in an ICU at a tier 2 trauma Hospital, and also at a Dermatology office where we see patients with skin problems but also perform aesthetic procedures to improve skin through cosmetic treatments. In both areas of specialty in nursing there is a huge nursing shortage, especially now with the Covid-19 pandemic we are experiencing. Along with the nursing shortage there is a high turnover, and in part has to do with new grads being hired and feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work and pressure being put on them without the proper length of training. New nurse burnout has a negative effect on patients because they are not receiving the proper type of care and it leaves room for error and mistakes in treatment. The focus of my proposal for my project is to promote strategies in reducing the amount of high turnover at the Dermatology I work for and to promote a quality initiative to implement proper education and training so that nurses feel prepared and competent to carry out the tasks and treatments on patients and to set a limit on how many patients nurses see per day at the Dermatology office. Resources and interdisciplinary staff can be involved in making improvements to patient education, making it a collaborative effort to improve patient care and outcomes (Drake, 2017).
