Answer 4 for NRS 420 Explain what research has shown about the potential outcomes for teenagers who are not supported when in this difficult questioning period of “who they are.”

The mental health challenges faced by the transgender community are significantly marked by high rates of suicide. Research indicates that the prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts among transgender individuals is alarmingly high. According to a study by James et al. (2016) , 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt, and 92% of these individuals attempted suicide before the age of 25. This stark statistic underscores the acute distress many transgender people experience  (James et al., 2016).

Transition-related medical interventions, however, have been found to reduce this risk significantly. A systematic review by Virupaksha, Muralidhar, and Ramakrishna (2016) highlights that gender-affirming surgeries and hormonal treatments can lead to improvements in psychological functioning and a reduction in suicide rates among transgender individuals. These interventions are crucial as they help align individuals’ physical bodies with their gender identities, which can alleviate gender dysphoria and associated mental health issues (Virupaksha et al., 2016).

Furthermore, Budge, Adelson, and Howard (2013) discuss the importance of social support, legal recognition of gender, and protection against discrimination to enhance the mental health of transgender populations. Their findings suggest that supportive measures alongside medical interventions can further decrease the risk of suicide among transgender individuals (Budge et al., 2013).

Overall, while the transgender community faces high rates of suicide, access to transition-related care and supportive environments are key factors that can mitigate these risks.
